Second Avenue Subway – Phase 2
Second Avenue Subway – Phase 2 is a next-generation metro and rail system project planned or under construction to increase urban public transportation capacity. Second Avenue Subway – Phase 2 is the second phase continuing northward of the Second Avenue Subway, one of New York’s most important transportation projects that had been delayed for decades. The project aims to directly connect the East Harlem area to the subway network, reduce excessive passenger congestion on the Lexington Avenue Line, and eliminate transportation inequality in East Manhattan.

When this phase is completed, the eastern parts of Harlem will gain direct access to a high-capacity metro line for the first time. The new stations will mean shorter travel times and more reliable transportation for neighborhoods that have long had limited access to public transit in daily life.

The distinctive aspects of Second Avenue Subway – Phase 2:

Relief of overcrowded lines: balancing the passenger load on the Lexington Avenue Line

Deep underground engineering: tunnels excavated with TBM beneath dense urban development

Accessibility focus: modern stations with elevators and designed for universal access

Urban regeneration impact: economic and social revitalization around station areas

The project is positioned not only as a subway extension, but also as a social justice-oriented transportation investment that strengthens Harlem’s integration with the city and increases access to employment and education opportunities. When completed, Second Avenue Subway – Phase 2 will become a long-term balancing element in New York’s public transportation system and will improve quality of life in one of the city’s busiest corridors.
