The purpose of Rogfast is to significantly shorten travel time between the Stavanger and Haugesund regions, eliminate the Mortavika–Arsvågen connection currently provided by ferry, and turn the E39 route into a faster, safer, and uninterrupted logistics corridor along the west coast. In this way, travel time between Stavanger and Bergen will also be shortened by approximately 40 minutes. The project is being implemented by the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen), and the tunnel route has been planned as a highly comprehensive infrastructure investment with two separate traffic tubes, interchange structures, emergency escape connections, and an additional branch rising to Kvitsøy Island. The current target opening year in updated projections is 2033.
E39 Rogfast Fixed Link Project is a giant subsea road tunnel project built to make the E39 main highway on Norway’s west coast continuous. The project connects the municipalities of Randaberg and Bokn in the Rogaland region with an approximately 27 km long twin-tube tunnel passing beneath Boknafjord and Kvitsøyfjord. When completed, it will be one of the longest and deepest subsea road tunnels in the world, reaching approximately 390 meters below sea level at its deepest point.
